The UW Chronicles: Volume XIII: Neuman O's, Soy Milk and Hyper College Students

Hi guys, no big event to report, no massive lifestyle change. I'm just a little hyper because I've eaten about six Neuman O's (they're Oreos but without the cream and congealed animal fat...and they're organic, yum)and watched Kill Bill with my guy friend from the eleventh floor. And I'm doing my laundry. And making a CD for my Mom. And starting on a "recycled" birthday card for a lovely friend of mine. I'm multi-tasking, I guess you could say. But anyway, just wanted to say hello and post some photos from Martin Luther King Jr. day, for which my friends in Earth Club and I went out and volunteered to remove invasive blackberries from Magnuson Park in Seattle. It was loads of fun, as you can see by the following pictures (you can double click on them and view them larger if you want)...

We're such tree huggers, me and Stephanie

The whole gang, all diiiirty

I am a tree fairy! Hear me ROAR!

So, we weren't working that hard...

Jessica, Shilpa, Rachel, Erin, Me, and Laura

The Red Bull car came through and gave us free Red Bull while we waited for the bus to the park, disgusting stuff, just disgusting...but free.

Well, I have a few more pictures! Patricia just sent them to me....enjoy!

I got a freakin bulls eye, WOOT!

Patricia, before she cut her hair and straightened it...don't mess with that woman.

She's a vixen.

My bulls eye. Once again, the glory.

This is what happens when you study too much, you begin wearing orange rugs and acting like a tiger.

Once again, orange rug=tiger

Jessi is trying to tranquilize me with a dart.

No, don't beat me! Tigers are endangered!

Jessi, Jessica and I went to Pike's Place Market and had a ball...

Jessi and Jessica looking like the lovely ladies that they are..

That's hot.

I am an artichoke and she's corny! A ha ha haa haa haaa hahahe he heh hehh ehhh eheheh, bad joke.

We've died on the "Love Sak" that costs $300, it felt amazing to sit on a $300 bean bag. Like royalty, I tell you.

The UW Chronicles: Volume XII: Beautiful Breaks and Blue Follicles

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. *Sigh of relief* That feels like the first time I've breathed today. I'm back at school and it is just run around, run around, run around! I'm exhausted! Jumping into school after a really long relaxing break was hard, but I'm back into it and I love my classes. I'm taking Intro to Women's
Studies (which I love!), Intro to International Relations, and Philosophy 102: Contemplating Moral Issues. They're all good, the only down side is that every day except for Monday, I have all three classes and my brain just wants to shut down after that. But onto other things...

Do you notice anything different? *wink* *wink*

Breathe Grandy.
I dyed my cowlick blue yesterday, Patricia (my roommate) helped me, and I've gotten many compliments. It will come out Grandy, definitely before I see you again, don't worry. It's something that I've always wanted to do, but felt too hemmed in by what I was "supposed to look like or act like" to do it! I feel freer now and everyone says it totally fits me and my personality, as Patricia said, "It's spunky and cheerful and unique just like you!" I LOVE IT.
One woman walking behind me last night on The Ave leaned over to her boyfriend and said, look at her hair, it's beautiful! I blushed. We walked to go eat Indian food last night at Cedars, which is an incredible Indian restaurant located above The Flying Apron Bakery, which is a vegan, wheat-free, gluten-free bakery. They made my 19th birthday cake (a vegan one! yum!) and delivered it to McMahon! And guess who thought of this brilliant idea? My very own lovely Grandy. Thank you Grandy for making my birthday the sweetest one yet! I love you! Also, thanks to Tessa and the two other dreadlocked hippie bakers that delivered it! It was a chai spice cake and it was absolutely delicious!

BEFORE

AFTER

I invited a bunch of my friends over to my cluster and we just devoured it! It was gone a few days later. THEN, yesterday I got this perishable package in the mail, and I had no clue what it was! I opened it and read the note: "Happy Belated Birthday, Erinn! Hope you enjoy the vegan treats. We love you bunches!!! -Julia, Alissa and the Circle of Life Crew" I just about burst into happy tears. Inside were different varieties of vegan delicacies: cookies of every flavor (moist and chewy and *drool*) and the biggest vegan brownie I've ever seen! That quickly contented my friend Jessi, for whom it was "that time of the month." It was great to get something from them, since I haven't seen them in months and won't see them until summer. I did get to see Alissa (the executive director of Circle of Life and my bud/boss/role model, good combo) at my birthday at Millenium, which is a vegan, organic fancy schmancy restaurant in downtown San Francisco. The company and food couldn't have been better, I had the greatest time having all of my favorite people with me (well, not ALL of them, I love all of you too.) It was just oodles of fun, and my mom and I had gone on a really fun shopping adventure, during which we found a really cool tie-dyed brown and blue shirt (goes really well with my hair now ;)
All in all, it was a wonderful break, and I'm sure it will be a wonderful quarter, full of hard work with the Earth Club, but also a lot of fun. Cheers, I love you all, and happy happy New Year!

P.S. Wondering what the heck I'm talking about when I mention Circle of Life? Check out their website (www.circleoflife.org) and another blog that I frequently read, Julia Butterfly Hill's blog on http://www.circleoflife.org/wtp2004/blogs/
It's a lot of fun to read about her many lovely and mind-opening adventures and her commentary about those experiences...Enjoy!

P.S.S. Here are more photos of the blue-beautifying project...

These are the highlights that had to be done...Thanks Patricia!

Sexy pose again, with the hair! Yay!

Here's what we did...pretty color huh?
And

A happy, albeit silly, girl. :)

The UW Chronicles: Volume XI: Cancellations and Christmas Cheer

Well, today has been full of surprises. I’m on a plane right now to Las Vegas from Seattle, and then hopefully on to Ontario from Las Vegas on standby. I was meant to go to Sacramento and then on to Ontario, but my flight was cancelled. Yuck. First finals stress and then this. We just passed over Mount Rainier, and it was so beautiful. White with snow, and surrounded by these blackened, snow covered peaks, it was amazing. Then I played some Unreal Tournament with Ani DiFranco playing in the background, as I blew some guys up. They definitely call it “Unreal Tournament” for a reason. You can blow yourself up and “re-spawn” as they call it. It’s super fun, but I stopped playing it because I’m on the aisle and I didn’t want people thinking I’m a total freak. Suprisingly, Ani DiFranco’s “Superhero” and the carnage went well together.

I’m also done with my finals, isn’t that exciting? I got a B+ on my astronomy final, which I’m happy about because I hated astronomy. I received a 3.9 on my geography presentation about the meat industry and their use of GM feed. I was “Patty Public-Relations” and my last slide included pictures of meat and the animals that contribute that meat and then it flashed, “Thank you from the folks at Sunnyside Meat Company.” It was really fun to do, and then the paper that I slaved over for weeks got a 3.8. So, over all I’m very satisfied with my grades, the only thing I’m worried about is the geography final which was two timed essays on different subjects from our course. It was very difficult and I’m hoping I got a good score on it, I don’t even know when I’ll get those grades back.

But, I’m going home, first to Grandy’s and then on to Oakland and mom, Claire, Joe and the doggies (and kitty and fish) and my other family over at Circle of Life (hopefully). I miss everyone greatly, and can’t wait to get covered in kisses by my Grandy, sit by the fire with my family and open presents, and open the door at Circle of Life and hug everyone really hard and laugh at the joy of seeing all these people I haven’t seen in four months. I can’t wait to see all my high school buds and exchange college stories about only ten washers and driers for five thousand students, and the lucky objects we brought with us to finals (in my case, my Burt’s Bees lip balm and my lucky hematite ring, which supposedly absorbs negative energy and then cracks when it’s done. I guess it must have gotten overloaded at finals, because I dropped it yesterday and it broke into two pieces on the linoleum of my hallway). I’m excited to eat real food, although I will give the dining hall a pat on the back. After scraping them over the coals for not providing enough vegan food in a survey I did (I explained to them that I am NOT a rabbit), they labeled a lot of different things with the ingredients and even had a cold pasta salad that was labeled as vegan! It was very exciting, but I’m stoked that I get to cook my own food; I will be cooking Christmas dinner at my Grandy’s house using the cookbook Julia B. sent me (“The Garden of Vegan”, clever eh? It’s an amazing cookbook). I’m thinking the baked Portobello mushroom dish with almonds, some vegan mashed potatoes (and some regular ones), maybe some sort of soup, and a yummy dessert, brownies or cookies maybe. Yum. Well, I’m going to go and play some more “Unreal Tournament.” I will write more later, when I actually get to my destination!
